The Fastest Way to Kill Initiative? Micromanage.

Sample Client List
by John Austin in Behavior change

Micromanagement starts with good intentions. You want to make sure things are done right. You want to support your team. You want to avoid mistakes.

But over time, micromanagement sends a dangerous message:

“I don’t trust you.”

And when people feel that, they stop trying. They stop thinking for themselves. They stop bringing new ideas. Initiative dies.

Think about the employee who used to take charge but now waits to be told what to do. Or the team that never innovates, because “it’s easier to wait for approval.”

That’s not a people problem. That’s a leadership environment problem.

Here’s a better way:

  1. Define the desired outcome.
  2. Pinpoint a few key behaviors that matter.
  3. Set up regular feedback loops—not constant check-ins.
  4. Let them own the process.

Then, if things go off track, step in with support—not control.

When you create space for ownership, you get creativity, motivation, and resilience. The very things your team needs to thrive.

People rise when you show trust—and shrink when you take it away.
