Are You Seeing What’s Going Right?

Sample Client List

Most leaders are wired to spot problems. But what if the real key to improving performance is focusing on what’s going right?

Let me tell you about Gretchen, an individual contributor I worked with. She made a conscious decision to look for things to praise at work. Not only did she notice more good behaviors, but she found her entire perspective shifted—even in her personal life. By looking for the positive, she saw more of it.

Here’s how to become a better observer of the good:

  • Start with a daily reminder: Set an intention to look for positive behaviors.
  • Notice the small stuff: It’s not just about big wins. The everyday efforts matter too.
  • Be specific in your praise: “I noticed how you handled that tricky situation—great job keeping things calm.”
  • Share your observations: Let people know you see their efforts.
  • Track your progress: Keep tabs on how often you give positive feedback.

When you shift your focus to what’s going well, you’ll be amazed at how much more good behavior you see—and how much your team appreciates it.

An excellent reminder, John, to have even more of our focus on what is going well and letting our coworkers know what those things are and how they have contributed. Overtime, as you’ve said in so many of your writings, the investment in goodwill enables us to give corrective feedback without jeopardizing our relationship.
